How can I undo an unintended change?

When I type an entry into Excel 97, it divides the number by one hundred. If I type 96, the cell will show 0.96. I don't know what I accidently changed to cause this, so now I can't get rid of it. I tried running the Excel.exe from the install disk, but it did the same thing. It doesn't matter if the cell is formatted general, number, currency, etc. Protection on or off, doesn't matter. Applies to all cells. Text works OK. What did I do???

Thank you.
