How can I type on a line in a template?

This is a Word document. It is a face sheet (demographic information) for a
small medical facility. When I type on the lines in the template the lines
"grow" and after I type in the information, I have to hit the delete key
several times to shorten the line I am trying to type on. How can I fix that?
