After placing a disc in an external optical drive I clicked on iTunes and a
window from MusicMatch pops-up asking me to Register. How can can determine
which file is causing this pop-up winmdow to appear on my screen?

I am runnning Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 5.1.2600 Service
Pack 2 Build 2600

there are a couple
of ways.

but one way would
be to open your
task manager via
ctrl alt del keys.

then when the pop
up occurs, take
a look at the processes
listed.

you should have both
windows opened, e.g.
task mgr & the pop up
so you can switch between
them....

Thank you for your reply to my question.

I opened Task Mgr. and the pop-up simultaneously. The only processes with
CPU activity were svchost.exe, which used 2%, and Task Manager. When I
closed the pop-up this didn’t change. What do you make of this?

It doesn't take much CPU power to display a pop-up window, and it goes
by pretty fast, so that you only saw two processes with CPU activity
really doesn't mean much.

Svchost runs processes from dll files. There may be, and usually are,
several svchost.exe processes active at once. If you're interested in
seeing what dlls are running in a svchost instance, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056

It seems a bit odd that MusicMatch would appear when you click on
iTunes. More likely, mmtask.exe is running in the background. Is it
listed in Task Manager? If you don't want MusicMatch, why not just
uninstall it?

ok,

if there wasn't a
process noted in
the task manager indicating
a special process launched
for registering, then
the program you are launching
is encoded with a nag screen.

It is likely monitoring
the program for how many times
your running it and or monitoring
for the date and time to disable
the unregistered program eventually.

the issue you have doesn't
seem to be serious or uncommon
and it may be that you simply
have to make a choice of registering
or uninstalling that program.

Use Filemon from www.sysinternals.com to watch which files call what.

Good Luck.

Does your "reply window" limit the length of lines to what shows
above or do you?

humorously, you
might have answered
your own question.....

go work for discovering
it. Where was it hiding?

I shut down MMTASK and the pop-up stopped. What does MMTASK do?

Thank you.

I have installed Filemon. I would welcome any advice on how tro best to use
Filemon. Last look it had assigned 865 ID numbers. Sawonly onw failure the
rest said succeeded.

Filemon lists all file access attempts.
Look for the .exe file you are running, and what files it accesses.
It's up to your fault finding skills to determine which calls are
being made by the application you are running.
Some of those calls could even start other processes which open files
etc etc.
It's real detective work required here.
Only you can determine which file is causing your popup, and how
important it is to find it.
To make the popup go away, you might just register, like it wants you
to.

Good Luck
