Hello

I copied a pst file from an old machine to the new machine and when you
start Outlook
on the new machine it takes an age to load. There is not that much in the
pst file. I did a compact but it seemed to make no difference.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this.

More details please.

How long is an arbitrary term like an age? (Archaeologists mean tens of
thousands of years, physicists can mean nanoseconds ..... and what I would
call an age is likely to be different to your thoughts) Was it a long load
time before the 'copy'? - Can you give some meaningful
description/comparison
of before/after times.
How much is in the inbox?
Where are the imported items stored?
And how did you 'copy' them into the program- there is a proper way for this
process.

etc.......

I copied the pst file and pointed Outlook to using this pst file.

Explain what you did.
You did more than just copy a PST file.

OK, here are some more details:

I copied the pst file (100 or so MB) from old PC to new PC. New PC running
Outlook 2003. I deleted blank starter pst file created by Outlook. Then
ran Outlook again, it of course couldn't find pst file so I then browse to
my pst file.

About 100 or so messages in Inbox. Removed all messages in Sent Items and
other folders. Did a Compact.

Outlook takes about three minutes to load - seems excessive on a new
machine. Something must be wrong because it loads fairly quickly on old
machine (with more in pst file).

Finally, some information.
Hard to imagine a worse way to migrate to another Outlook Data File
and set it as the default. Your profile is now corrupt.
Create a new profile. Then please read the Help Files and use the
supported method to migrate to another PST file.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

Really? I've done that exact same thing a gazillion times with no problems
whatsoever.....is it unsupported?

Indeed. Always has been, but it really only became an issue with Outlook
2003. Earlier versions were somewhat more tolerant of the methods normal
humans and all other software use to migrate data.
Nothing you have ever learned about data transfer applies to Outlook. It is,
as you well know, a uniquely cantankerous and intolerant program.

As Ross advises that is not the correct way to import messages. Your use of
the word copy seemed to indicate that- follow his advise and remember the
term import for what you wish to achieve. It is likely that corruption is
the cause of the long load times, the poor program is trying to understand
the data.

Good luck.

I hope you're not advising the OP to import the PST. That's certainly not
the way.
