Hey Folks. I may already be headed in the right direction but I wanted to
make sure I had any specific steps necessary to do this properly before I
tried to do this tomorrow on my own. I have dsl/cable router at home that I
plug 2 pc's into the ethernet ports for internet access. It works like a
charm. I didn't have to configure anything in windows and both machines get a
dhcp address from my cable company. I have a parallel printer hooked up to
one of the pc's and I'd like to be able to print from the other pc as well. I
understand that if I gave both of the machines a static ip address in the
192.168 range I would have to make one a domain controller and the other a
workstation and that way I could just share the printer from one of the
machines. But my experience tells me that the machines then wont be able to
access the internet via dhcp. Is there away around this? Are there any
steps/configurations in Windows that could make this happen? One machine is
XP and the other WIndows 2000. Thanks in advance.

Right-click My Computer and go to properties. Get the computer name and
write it down, you'll need it later.

Then go to Start->Settings->Printers and Faxes

Find the printer, right-click on it, go to Properties.

Click the Sharing tab and select to share the printer. It will either ask
for a name for the printer or provide you with one. In either case, just
right it down.

With both the computer name and the printer name, go to the other computer.

Click on Start->Settings->Printers and Faxes

Click Add a Printer (make sure you have the drivers ready, check the
printer manufacturer website for these)

Go through the steps for adding a printer, you are adding a network printer.

Select "Connect to this printer". In the box provided, your use the
Computer name and the Printer name with a few \\ in place.
For a Computer Name of COMPUTERNAME and a printer name of PRINTERNAME, the
exact format would look like:
\\COMPUTERNAME\PRINTERNAME

Keep going through the wizard until the printer is made, (it will ask for
the drivers at some point or another)

Your printer is set and can now print on both computers, so long as the
computer it is attached to is turned on.
