I tried to upgrade professional with sp1 only to find out that the copy that was on my system when I bought it was a boot leg version. I have a legit version and I want to install it over the current one. The problem is that when I try to install it it does not give me the option of an up-grade only the advanced full install. I cannot afford to loose any data because this is my business system. Can anyone help?

Thanks Trent

If you are getting the following error message when attempting to update to SP1:

Error Message: The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You'll have to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP Pro CD and Product Key
that comes with it. (You cannot simply change the Product Key)

Did you miss the part about I have a Full Version of xp professional? I pretty much figured that out when I realized that I had a bad copy. Now the question is? Will I lose my data with a repair install?

Sorry, but you did not outright state you had a "Full Version" of XP.

Moving right along:

If you follow the repair procedure I suggested, you won't lose your data.
However, a "prudent person" would always backup his data prior to performing
any major repair to an operating system.....just in case.

Good Luck!

Thank you for the help. Forgive me for the comments on the other post. I am just very frustrated with this thing. Microsoft is no help and before I started installing the software I needed some help and of course I could never get through to anyone at microsoft and could not find an answer in their knowledge base and the manual is not very informative. (great run on sentence) Just remember that when you respond to us knuckle heads, were just not as educated as you guys on this, if we were we wouldn't need your help. I know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous with it and do not really have time to get into the nuts and bolts of how it really works.

I'll give your suggestion a try.
Thanks again

You simply need to change the product key to the one you just
purchased.

I think this is what you might need...

After you get the new product key put in, you should be able to
install the service pack.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Have a nice week...

That won't work. You can't replace the pirated VL product Key
with a retail Product Key. The OP needs to perform a repair
installation.
