Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch the Task Manager, then
see which application is eating up increasing amounts of
memory.

U should have min 1GB RAM & enuf VM(pagefile) allocated on a HDD so
this doesnt happen( see
http://www.petri.co.il/pagefile_optimization.htm )

Any advice is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Log on on as "Administrator", then promote your usual
logon account. You can do it like so:
- Click Start / Run / cmd {OK}
- Type this command:
net localgroup "Administrators" aa /add {Enter}
(assuming that "aa" is your usual logon account)

Thanks.
On Ctrl+Shift+Esc I have a message that Task Manager is switched off by
Admin. I am Admin on this computer - how do I switch it on?

I am Administrator and logged as Administrator for there is no other
accounts on this machine - do I still need to add another account or I can
switch on Task Manager from where I am, i.e. from the Administrator account?

Thanks
The article you mention advises to go to
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
and set
DisableTaskMgr to 0

However there is no DisableTaskMgr in my
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
I have there
dontdisplaylastusername
legalnoticecaption
legalnoticetext
shutdownwithoutlogon
and one entry of REG_SZ type with no name and no value set to it, having an
"ab" icon

What shal I do in this situation?

That is rule of thumb I was told by geeks (EEs, physicists,..) when I
had 256MB given I dont run any CAD,...so it was a minimum.

Thanks- bye- Larry

Why should the OP have a minimum of 1GB of RAM? How much RAM a user needs
depends on the apps they run

Well these geeks are not quite informed on XP, are they? It does depend on
what is run on the system. Someone doing email and some light word
processing doesn't need 1GB. 512MB is a good choice for many with 1GB as
overkill. Vista ups the ante.

Told to you by geeks or not, like many rules of thumb, that one is
completely false. What Rock says below is correct.
