I want to modify a file in a compressed folder, say want to edit a word file
in a compressed folder. However when the file is extracted it is placed in a
temporary directory as "read only" so when I try to save it I cannot. This
used to be automatic when I used winzip (winzip used to ask me "file was
modified do you want to update") but things seem to work differently in XP
Thanks

Drag the file to a different folder (such as your desktop). Set it
to non-readonly if Properties show readonly. Modify it. Close the
program that does the modfifying. Drag the modified file back to
the compressed flder and it will replace the old version (with your
permission).

Or ... just install Winzip. :-)

I rather like the WinXP interface for ZIP files, but I miss
Winzip's ability to look inside self-extracting zips with the .exe
extension. WinXP is on my list to install tomorrow, along with
Mozilla and Apache updates.
