How Can I Make Phone Calls From Computer

How, without buying expensive programs or using credit
card using programs, use my computer to make and recieve
telephone calls. My friend used to be able to do this on
an old version of windows but I can't seem to find
anything on XP.
 
Windows XP has no native method of making telephone calls.
Some modem manufacturers offer modems and software for this.

That wont work cause its a whole network and the other
people have to have the program too. I want something
that I can use to call a phone from my computer. Just
like a telephone but it runs through the phone line coming
out of my computer.
 
There are programs that do what you want. Maybe use the same progrm
you've always used. Nothing that special about XP comapred to NT or Win
98 ...

When I had a dial-up modem installed, I could dial phone numbers. Now that
I have an ADSL modem, I don't have a way to dial.

Your question may have more to do with your hardware than with your version
of Windows.

I've never used any other programs before. my friend did
but that was on his old computer and I don't know the name
of it. thats what I'm trying to figure out is the name of
a program I can use to do this.
 
My modem can make phone calls I just need a program that
can do it. And I don't know the name of any programs.
Thats what I am trying to find.
 
You need to have a voice modem and headset to do this, and of course the
software that comes with the voice modem.

from your PC to a phone, but have not heard of one that
goes both ways. But why would you want that, when you can
simply use the telephone?
