Launch charmap.exe to see what the codes are for your
accented letters, then do this in order to write Élève:

Numlock on
Hold down the Alt key
Type 0201 on the numeric key pad
Release the Alt key
Type L
Hold down the Alt key
Type 0232 on the numeric key pad
Release the Alt key
Type ve

What language keyboard? All keyboards are the same electrically but differ in what is painted on the keys.

Have a look at some European keyboards, the ones
that sport Shift, Ctrl and Alt keys plus an extra prefix key
to cater for special accents.

You need to install the Language bar and set up the coresponding French
language style Then, you need to locate the accents on the uni-lingual KB.

Hi Dominique

As you see from the responses, there are several different ways to do
this. Personally I like a small free application called Allchars
http://allchars.zwolnet.com/introduction.html

It runs in the system tray and works with all Windows programs. To use
an accent or special character, you first press and release Control (you
can change this to another key if you prefer) then two keys which
together make up your character. For example, typing a comma plus c
makes ç, ' plus e makes é, ^ plus o makes ô. and so on.

I have used it for many years and can recommend it.

Hope this helps.

If you have an USA keyboard, select the "English International"
keyboard driver from control panel

Then, if you want to write an accented a, you write the sequence 'a
and the accented a appears correctly, etc.

If you want to write the ' character, you should write the sequence
'<space>, etc.

The same for other accents, like ` ~ or ^.

Note: Please forgive me for my bad English, I am trying to improve it!

The person that I bought my computer from printed a sheet with a the keys to
press but it doesn't work.

Like for example:

Lettre Clefs

e(with accent) </>
E(with accent) <Shift></>
