John

I just got this computer from a company in California and
on the box it said it was made in China. Ok. So it came
with Windows 98 and I asked them to send me Windows XP and
I paid them for it and I received the OEM copy with the
sticker and key in the mail and I received Windows XP with
Service Pack 1 it says. But when I put the Windows XP cd-
rom into my computer and clicked check compatibility it
said that I could not upgrade from Windows98.

What do I have to do to get Windows XP to work on my
computer? Copy all of my data I have made for the last
week since I got the computer onto cd-roms and reformat
the hard drive and then run the cd? How would I boot it?
Pay Best Buy $100 to have them put the cd in and upgrade
it for me? This is just unreal. Do I have to buy an
upgrade for Windows 2000? Is it less expensive to get an
upgrade to Windows 2000 rather than the full version? I
need the path of least possible resistance please I am
quite new to Windows. I have used Macintoshs for the last
several years. Thanks. Please reply to the forum so I
may find out what to do. Microsoft has ended Windows 98
technical support and the computer company is not
returning my calls.

Greetings --

An OEM CD cannot be used to perform an upgrade of an earlier OS,
as it was designed to be installed _only_ upon an empty hard drive.
It can still be used to perform a repair installation (a.k.a. an
in-place upgrade) of an existing WinXP installation. If your data is
at all important to you, back it up before proceeding.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD and pay careful
attention to the on-screen instructions and prompts. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process.

Oh, and just for your future information, Best Buy is probably one
of the worst possible places to go, when seeking computer support.
