I want to hide the toolbar so that I can have more room on the screen to view
and edit documents.

Which version of Word are you using? If this is Word 2007, the "toolbar" is
called the ribbon. You can double-click any text command (Home, Insert, Page
Layout, etc.) to minimize the ribbon. A "full" list of commands will be
available after clicking Home, for example; it will hide when clicking in
the document.

In Word 97-2003, you can right-click any toolbar and, on the context menu,
click to hide the ones that you don't want to see.
