How can I have every Word document default to a set of Options?

When I used Word in the past (the same Word 2002 I am using now), I could go
to Options and set the Tools>Options>Save function so that documents would be
saved every 1 minute instead of every 10, and Tools>Options>Edit could be set
so that "When selecting, automatically select entire word" was always
unchecked. This happened automatically, and I did not have to make these
changes for every single document. Now I do. How can this be fixed as it is
cumbersome and annoying to have to make the same setting changes on every
single document.
 
Word does not have an option to save the document every so many minutes.
What it has is the ability to save autorecover information which is not the

If Word is not saving options to the registry (where both settings are
stored) then it is possible that there is a minor corruption in the Word
data key in the registry. You can test this by renaming the key (to olddata)
and restarting Word, then make the changes again. It's the parent key shown
at http://www.gmayor.com/my_toolbars_are_missing.htm If that doesn't work
you can force the settings with autonew and autopen macros containing the
settings you have problems with eg

With Options
.AutoWordSelection = True
.SaveInterval = 1
End With

Though frankly a setting of every minute is too short and can disrupt your
work.

Do you have Acrobat or some add-in installed that might prevent the changes
from being saved?

Try making the changes, the hold down Shift while mousing to File>Save All.
That may do it.

Also, for your own protection, *Do Not* confuse 'Save AutoRecover Info' as
something that automatically *Saves* your document. AutoRecover Info is of
value only if Word or your system crash - it *doesn't* save your work for
you & setting it to 1 minute increments might prove to be more of a
hindrance than a help.
 
If you are opening and closing Word between documents, then it would appear
that your Options settings are not being saved when you close Word. This
could indicate a problem with the Word Data key in the Registry; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm for instructions on
rebuilding it. But the problem is often caused by an add-in loading at
Startup that changes the user's settings.

The options you describe are stored in the Registry so if Suzanne's
suggestion doesn't work then I suspect your changes aren't getting
saved due to having multiple document windows open and your
preferences are not getting updated as expected.

For example:

- You open document A
- You open document B
- In the document window for document B you go to Tools/Options and
makes some changes
- You close the window for document B
- You close the window for document A and exit Word

The result: The options set in document B are discarded and those set
in document A are used to update in the Registry when you exit Word.

To prevent this scenario from occuring, start Word, make sure you do
not have another other open documents, including Outlook if you use
Word as the email editor, and change your preferences.

I would think/hope that any Options settings that are not document-specific
would be applied to all open documents and saved regardless of which
document is closed first. Is this not your experience?

Some modifications are applied to every window but some aren't. Just
as a quick example, if you turn on/off non-printing characters then it
will only be applied to the current document window. I don't have a
list of all the options that don't migrate to all open windows
off-hand (I recall going through most of them at one point) but if
options aren't being saved it's another avenue to explore.
