I have a research paper that must have page numbers in the upper right,
except at the beginning of each chapter (which is only 5 times). At the start
of each chapter they must be at the bottom center. Currently all my page
numbers are bottom center. How can I change my numbering to top right with
the exception of the five chapter beginnings?

Start each chapter with a section break. In File > Page Setup > Layout,
check the "Different first page" box, with the "Apply to" box set to "Whole
document". Then each section will have a First Page Header and First Page
Footer on that first page, and regular Header and Footer on the other pages.

Put a page number field in the center of the First Page Footer, with nothing
in the First Page Header. Put a page number field at the right edge of the
regular Header, with nothing in the regular Footer. (Use tabs to position
the field at the center or right margin.)

If you used the Insert > Page Number dialog to insert the page number you
have now, delete that number.

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm for more
details.
