By getting a real software firewall and disabling MS' piss poor excuse
for a firewall. MS' firewall allows ALL programs on your computer access
to the Internet and hasn't the ability to do otherwise.

Well, thanks for making it look like my posting has been answered, thus
reducing the chance of other replies. You'd think, if you no so much about
MS's firewall, you could at least have given me the answer.

I don't know what you're talking about (don't really want to get into a long
discussion), but just last week I was able to get my offline backup working
again by changing the settings in the firewall. So it's doing *something*.
My problem now is I just can't remember how I got to the firewall settings
to change them.

When I can't remember how I got somewhere or where I went to change
something(which is happening more often these days), I go to Help and
Support. If you type in "firewall" you will be shown more information about
the firewall than you ever wanted to know.

HELP where???? I never know how to get to plain old Windows HELP, as
contrasted with IE HELP.

start>settings>control panel>windows firewall

Control Panel>Windows Firewall>Exceptions tab.

There is a "Help" button (or perhaps it says something like "Learn more
about Windows Firewall) in the WF applet. Use it for more detailed
answers.

Although "Alias" has been in my TWIT filter forever, he did give you the
correct answer. MS's firewall is inbound only, so as he said, it allows ALL
programs to access the Internet so essentially there's no such thing as "How
do I add and remove applications from the allowed and not allowed lists?"

His answer would have been more useful if he had pointed you to Zone Alarm
or other GOOD firewall programs that do allow REAL protection.
