How can I get that underscoring in pull-down menus to come back??

Hey there got a new laptop and the underscoring in pull-down menus is gone.
that underscoring of one letter in each item in any given menu would allow me
to learn the keyboard shortcuts which i use a LOT. anyone know how to get
that underscoring to appear??

The underscoring comes back the moment you press
the Alt key.

If you want them display'd at all times:
Start | Run <type in> DESK.CPL <enter>
Appearance > Effects > unselect hide underline ...
