Dear General Questions Community Members,

Hello! I have two questions I'd like help with, please.

QUESTION 1:
I am using Word 2002 SP2 and I would like to know how to
email a Master Document. Please?

It seems the links in the document are all absolute
paths? So if I email this, then they will break, as the
person receiving the email doesn't have access to my C
drive (I hope!).

I've looked, but haven't seen a way to make Word save the
subdocuments with a relative path? (That way I can
just .rar the entire folder and send it off) Am I going
about this in the wrong way?

QUESTION 2:
Do master documents still get corrupted?
I read here -
m that master documents get corrupted. Is this
information valid for Word 2002 SP2? Has it been resolved
in Word 2003?

Thank you!
Kou.

G'Day Kou,

1. If your Master Document and its sub-documents are in the same
folder when zipped, and if the recipient unzips them all to a single
folder, then the Master will 'find' its sub-documents when it is
opened.

2. Any kind of Document can become corrupt, and I have had a
few - however, by good fortune, I have NEVER had a corrupt
Master Document in almost 15 years of using Word!!

Nothing has been changed in Word 2003 to make the Master Document utility
more reliable. It is still a tool to be used with caution for reasons listed
in the link posted earlier in the thread.

Is this solution valid for Word 2002?

I did a very simple test.
1) Created 3 separate documents in the *same* folder: Main.doc, Chapter1.doc, Chapter2.do
2) Opened Main.doc, and added Chapter1.doc and Chapter2.doc as sub document
3) Saved and closed everytin
4) Renamed(moved) the original directory (note - if copied the subdocuments in the original folder are taken as subs!!
5) Opened Main.doc only to find out that the sub-documents are replaced by the frustrating *Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.* message :(

So what is the solution, really?
How can I have relative sub-document paths? What magic is needed in order to attain the good old and stable HTML behaviour? Why isn't it possible (in Word 2002, I do not know about the others) to modify sub-documents' links from Edit Menu/Links, just as any other linked document, picture etc..?

Also, when we try to expand the subdocuments in a badly referenced master document you get the prompt message "The subdocument <.doc file with the *exact* path!> is missing. Bla bla... ". That is eventhough it is wrong, the master document has the information on whereabouts of its subs. Is there any way to modify this information, without of course having to insert all the subs back again

Thanks
- Levent
