i have a document that lists songs. i would like to tell it to delete a
phrase that is in each song. how can i do that.

I'm not sure I understand what this has to do with the dictionary. You can
use Find and Replace to find text and replace it with nothing. If you are
wanting Word to mark a specific word as misspelled, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/ExcludeWordFromDic.htm. If you're just
looking for a way to highlight the word throughout the document, check the
box for "Highlight all items found" in the Find dialog.

Press F5, switch to the "Replace" tab, punch in the phrase into "Find What",
leave "Replace with" empty, press "Replace All" button.

This should work it
