How can i delete duplicate text in Word 2002

I have an old word document with a TOC. THe field codes in
the body are duplicated 3x. How do I get rid of 2 of them.

[2.01 "Absence in Military Service".01 "Absence
in Military Service".01 "Absence in Military Service".01
"Absence in Military Service"]
 
Do a Search and Replace with ^d^d^d in the Search for box
and ^d in the Replace with box.
 
Have you tried updating the TOC using F9?
