How can I cancel/delete an Outlook outgoing read receipt?

Someone sent a mail with a read receipt, which I clicked "yes" to allow.
Unfortunately, there is an error and the receipt cannot be sent as addressed.
I cannot figure out how to make Outlook **stop** trying to send the receipt.
I've opened the status box & clicked "Cancel task" but that only stops *this*
attempt. A few minutes later Outlook is at it again. This is driving me nuts.

Any suggestions??

I had found some non-MS references but they were all for 3rd party apps. The
SMTP server reference at the start of the link you mentioned did the trick.
