I wuld like to use the appointments available in the outlook calendar as
reminders of forthcoming events. Can I get the reminder to show without
opening the full program??

The program must be open to work.

No. However, you can configure both Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2003 so that
when you minimize it its handle appears in the Notification area of the
System Tray rather than Taskbar. Many people find that an acceptable
approach.
