I guess I'd have to ask, are you *trying* to send a .dat file on purpose? Or
are you trying to send an attachment, and it's coming though as a .dat file?

If the latter, make sure to use Plain Text or HTML, not Rich Text.

if you are using outlook and receive RTF formatting in a dat file that
outlook can't decipher, the mail server did something to it to break it and
you can't put it back together.

I "recieved" an attachment in the format of a .dat file and when I open it
all I see is the HTML code and not the format as it was meant to be viewed
with all it's graphic and text content. Does this help clarify my question?
Thanks for your help!!

No, it isn't really related. You can't open a dat file someone sent you, and
they can't open a dat file you send them. You both need to use Plain Text or
HTML. Not Rich Tex.t

If when you open the .dat file you see HTML, save it to disk, rename it to
..htm and then open it with a double-click.

Not true! I could open them in Outlook on my old computer but now with a
new OS and version of Outlook they don't open correctly. So there's a
configuration problem here.

But with Outlook 2003 on my old computer I could open them in Outlook. So it
must be an issue of configuration but I can't determine what has changed.

I could open a .dat file correctly in Outlook 2003 on my old computer, but
having upgraded to a new computer my Outlook settings are gone and the .dat
files don't open correctly. It must be a configuration issue - are you sure
you don't know about this?

Use Windows Explorer's Tools>Folder Options>File Types to define the
application you wish to use to open the .dat files, then.
