How boot in safe mode?

I have a book (_Using Microsoft Windows XP Home_) that tells
me how to boot to Safe Mode or to a variety of other
options. It says to look during boot for a "message about
pressing F8". I never see that message, and I don't know
how to get into the menu of optional boot modes.

At the moment, I'm particularly interested in getting into
"Safe Mode with Command Prompt".

Would someone please tell me what I might be doing wrong.

When the computer reboots, right after the first screen with the BIOS
information disappears, tap the F8 key repeatedly until you get the menu
that includes safe mode and safe mode with command prompt.

There is no message; but on power up you tap on F8 repeatedly as soon as
BIOS screens go to black, before the Windows flag shows, and you will
get the menu including Safe Mode.
