Hover Buttons in Internet Explorer

After installing several recent updates to Windows I now
find that all of the hover buttons I have installed don't
show up - just the partial outline of a box with a red X.
When I go into FrontPage to repair the problem they look
just fine. The only way I have found around this is to
change them all to text links and that will take forever
as there are a lot of these buttons.

Does anyone have any idea what to do to repair this
problem? I'm thinking it's something in Active X controls,
but I can't zero in on the cause.

The FrontPage hover buttons are Java applets. Do Java applets on other
pages work?
