I spend hours setting-up Outlook 2000 on my office PC (Win 98), thinking that
this will revolutionise the organisation of my busy life, then only to find
that I cannot use my Hotmail e-mail account on it. How daft is that? What
do I do now? - go back to Outlook Express, I suppose. Bloody computers, I
hate them!

I've had the Hotmail account for years, and no problem with using it on OE.
Nothing has been said about it not working.

Thankyou. Why will Hotmail 'soon cease to work in OE'? I've had the account
for years without problem, and the storage size has been increased, without
indication of having to pay (I've just looked through all my 'Hotmail staff'
messages. Have I missed something?

See http://www.slipstick.com/addins/services/online.htm#hotmail for
alternatives - hotmail will soon cease to work in OE too unless you pay for
it.

Then you haven't been reading very much because it's been a prominent topic
in various Internet forums for the last three months.

Because Microsoft wants more of your money and since Yahoo! did it in the
recent past, MS feels they can do the same.

it's explained at the link - they had a problem with spammers scripting the
webdav protocol and closed it to all but paid subscribers.

I have much things to do than to read 'internet forums', whatever they are,
like my job.
Nothing else I use requires me to keep finding out what's wrong with it, why
it doesn't work, or to keep buying or collecting extra bits that the
manufacturers were too lazy or incompetent to get right the first time - my
lawnmower doesn't suddenly need an update, or require me to pay the
manufacturer again so it keeps working - and I can just imagine the reaction
if I went back and said 'by the way, I know I charged the full price
originally, but I've got to bill you again'. I think it's about time that
computers started to operate in the same real world and universe as the rest
of us.

Well, if you're like most people, you never paid for your Hotmail account in
the first place, so why complain about something that was free going away?

And most lawn mowers DO suddenly need an update. It's called "sharpening
the blade", "buying gasoline", "getting a tune up", and so on. You
certainly don't get those free (except, perhaps, for the blade, but then you
have to buy the tools to sharpen it). I'm always amazed when people squawk
when something that was free now costs, like they're being robbed or
something.

Well, that's the excuse. ;-)
