Running OE6 and WinXP SP1.

I had to reformat my drive and reinstall WinXP.
In OE, as 2nd Mail Account, the folder Hotmail showed up with no
subfolders. Then I get the message:

There are not any folders to show for this account. Would you like to view a
list of available folders now? I click "Yes" and then get the following
message:

Configuration:
Account: Hotmail
Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
User name::xxxxx@ hotmail.com
Protocol: HTTPMail
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 80004005

===============================
Starting to synchronize the Hotmail folder that I found in OE, I got the
following message:

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account: 'Hotmail',
Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol:
HTTPMail, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 12019, Error Number:
0x80004005.

Help appreciated.

Joss.

If you don't have a hotmail account go into your menu and choose Accounts
and remove it. It will then stop trying to poll for it. Or if you do have
it, this screen will let you set it up.

Thanks for replying. I had an account Hotmail. I removed it through Tools,
Accounts, Mail. Shut down and reinstalled Hotmail. Still not able to add the
subfolders to Hotmail.

Prior to reinstall of WinXP - Home Edition - I would say 2 or 3 weeks , I
could not get mail messages in my OE/Hotmail Inbox which had been installed
earlierwith the other subfolders in June 03. No new hardware or sofware had
been installed except for one software "AutoSave".

To add folders to the Hotmail account go to the Hotmail web
page and create folders. These new folders will be
downloaded when you sync.

To add folders in Outlook Express for local storage
highlight the local folders and select new on the file menu.

My request was probably not clear.

The folder Hotmail appears under OE. But it does not even contains the
Inbox, Sent, Draft, Junk. Nothing. There were additional folders on my
Hotmail Web page. I even added another 5.

When I click on "Hotmail" I get the message: There are not any folders to
show for this account. Would you like ...... As soon as I click yes (it
starts to download for a fraction of a second but I get the message "An
unknow error has occurred".
Details:
Configuration:

Has the account ever worked in OE? The problem may be on Hotmail's end.

I should have thanked you first for the time you have spent setting a way to
resolve my problem. I had checked the KB and found 4 similar cases but
with a different error number. And it seems that I am nearly out of that
mess.

Part 2 of 2.

*-* IE Tools>Int.Options>Security>[I did not see :zone OE runs, should be

1] - Anonymous Logon - default and error message
2] - Automatic Logon in Intranet Zone - error message
3] - Automatic Logon with Current Username and Password - error message.
4] - Prompt for user name and password and when I went to OE-Folder
Hotmail and could find the subfolders including some I had made
myself. But nothing showed up in the folders. After several restart, but
without asking for a Username and Password I got the files that were in
the folders.

What I find strange now is that every time I click on a Hotmail Subfolder I
get the error message:Configu...Account Hotmail...server... but the mail is
there. Except: I have sent to Hotmail through my other email account, 2
messages which arrived in Hotmail, which I read on the MS site of Hotmail
but which I can not get on OE-Hotmail Inbox.

And in my taskbar there is an envelope which shows me there is mail but I
can't get to it. If I click left or right nothing is happening. Another
problem maybe associated with the changes I made!!!

The [error messages] you're receiving are /not/ a good sign. Post each

Doubtful but: Create a new Named Identity (File>Identities>Add new identity)

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each

everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

I have been on this PC for several hours because since yesterday, after
making some changes according to my 2 previous e-mail plus KB 813444 where I
executed the Sfc.ex, Register .dll files (I did not have trouble connecting
to 128 bit sites) plus look at your answer on Google - thread:
http://snurl.com/Ivxy and found out also that error80004005 is rare I was
ready to give up because :

In OE Inbox: There was no mail in the Inbox notwithstanding that there was
an envelope in the taskbar with a post showing 6 pieces. Clicking on the
envelope had no effect whatsoever. Inbox remained blank.

I was able to send from OE to Hotmail test messages yesterday and today.
They arrived in MS site Hotmail but did not show up in the subfolder
Hotmail/Inbox. This morning I returned to the original settings one by one,
restarting after each one, to no avail. Shut it down. 10 minutes ago I
restarted it and could not believe what had happened.

OE-Inbox had received 4 messages, lost 2 somewhere
OE-Hotmail/Inbox . The message I had sent through OE were there as well as
the Junk and other folders.

Only one point is not correct: One out of 10 times when clicking one of the
subfolders of OE>Hotmail -I can see the content of the subfolder- I get the
message: An Unknown error has occur: Details
Configuration:
All what I do I delete the message.

I will start now looking for Hijackware and report later (today). And
thanks..

The [error messages] you're receiving are /not/ a good sign. Post each

Doubtful but: Create a new Named Identity (File>Identities>Add new identity)
and configure the Hotmail account in it. Any better? If the account works
in the new identity, import messages from the old identity before deleting
it (File>Identities>Manage identities).

I have no doubt whatsoever that you must now check your system for
"hijackware":

CoolWebSearch Chronicles

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.mvps.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

I should have thanked you first for the time you have spent setting a way
to resolve my problem. I had checked the KB and found 4 similar cases
but with a different error number. And it seems that I am nearly out of
that mess.

Part 2 of 2.

*-* IE Tools>Int.Options>Security>[I did not see :zone OE runs, should be
restricted Sites] - I clicked on the Globe"Internet">Custom level>User
Authentication> and toggle between
1] - Anonymous Logon - default and error message
2] - Automatic Logon in Intranet Zone - error message
3] - Automatic Logon with Current Username and Password - error
message. 4] - Prompt for user name and password and when I went to
OE-Folder
Hotmail and could find the subfolders including some I had made
myself. But nothing showed up in the folders. After several restart, but
without asking for a Username and Password I got the files that were
in the folders.

What I find strange now is that every time I click on a Hotmail Subfolder
I get the error message:Configu...Account Hotmail...server... but the
mail is there. Except: I have sent to Hotmail through my other email
account, 2 messages which arrived in Hotmail, which I read on the MS site
of Hotmail but which I can not get on OE-Hotmail Inbox.

And in my taskbar there is an envelope which shows me there is mail but I
can't get to it. If I click left or right nothing is happening. Another
problem maybe associated with the changes I made!!!

*Q* Has the account ever worked in OE?
*A* Yes, perfectly up to ± 3 or 4 weeks ago, when one day I could not
get to my Hotmail Inbox when I was in OE. I had made no changes at all
but had maybe downloaded a Hot Fix.. It's only now that I wonder about:
Could it have happened while downloading, after reinstalling XP, 15 "Hot
Fix"?

*Q* Is it a Hotmail or an MSN?
*A* Hotmail configured in OE. (e-mail address removed)

*Q* Is time, date, etc set correctly?
*A* Yes, was correct

*_* IETools>Int.Options>Privacy>Edit>Hotmail Account >Allow Cookies.
Tested it but received the message: An unknown error has occurred.

*Q* How do you connect? Network?
*A* ADSL and single home PC.

*-* IE Tools-Internet Opt-Advanced>HTTP 1.1> toggle between the 2
options.
*-* a) was set on HTTP 1.1 - error message
b) changed to HTTP 1.1 - ...proxy connections - got the error
message

This is PART 1 out of 2. Part 2 will follow within one hour. Time to have
something to eat in Vancouver BC.

Has the account ever worked in OE? The problem may be on Hotmail's end.

Is it a Hotmail ([email protected]; to configure in OE, see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=220852) account or an MSN
([email protected]; to configure in OE, see
http://supportservices.msn.com/us/oeconfig/, valid MSN ID required)
account?

When others get this error they usually find their ISP started using a
"transparent proxy server" which does not support WebDAV. See this
archived thread: http://snurl.com/1vxy.

Make certain your time, date, and /time zone/ settings are correct.

On Tuesday:

* I created a new ID but it seemed results were somewhat better, less error
messages.
* Installed and ran CWShredder: with report - not present, none infected :
but still from time to time "An unknown error had occurred...."
* I installed Adaware but did not ran it, just printed the Instructions.
* I sent mail from my MSHotmail account to my OE account but it did not show
up as received in the Inbox.
* After several Restarts and spending days in front of this PC (yes I am
retired) I just give up for the day.

Today, Wednesday.

* Started the PC this morning, still the same error message 80004005.
* Ran CWShredder, created a new ID, and restarted.
* Don't know what happened. I can send messages from one account to the
other, I can click on Synchronize All. Everything works without ANY error
messages.

I thank you.

What I did not tell you because I did not want to deal with several subjects
in one thread ls:
Since I reinstalled WinXP on April 13:
*Adjust Power Properties: Monitor shuts off ALWAYS after 10 min whatever
setting I choose, even 1 H or 5..(in case of non activity)
*I can not reinstall the driver for my Lava Parallel-PCI card.. When I
remove this device and restart my PC, I get the message that there is new
hardware but it disappears fast and does not give me the chance to insert my
floppy. This 24 pin printer was working properly before reinstalling XP.
