MSN (Hotmail) discontinued providing POP3 and SMTP mail servers
something like 2 years ago. To access Hotmail, you must now use a
WebDAV-enabled client, and the ones that are such are Outlook and
Outlook Express (there are some online services that will yank using
WebDAV and put your Hotmail into their POP3 server that you then
access).

You have heard about Microsoft changing its policy regarding freebie
Hotmail accounts, right, that occurred back on September 27, 2004?
WebDAV access is denied to all freebie Hotmail accounts created after
that date, and WebDAV access will get denied sometime around March 2005
for all freebie Hotmail accounts created before that date.

If you want local e-mail client access using WebDAV to Hotmail and it
doesn't work, you'll have to PAY for their premium service to enable
WebDAV access on your Hotmail account.

If you feel so inclined, use the Contact Us link at the bottom of
Microsoft's home page to send them feedback via their wishlist web form
to let them know you naviated through their online help to find a page
describing configuration which is no longer valid. Those pages were
composed when Outlook 2000 was relatively new and when Hotmail still
provided POP3 and SMTP servers (*if* you paid for them) but Microsoft no
longer provides POP3 and SMTP servers for Hotmail (even if you do pay).

Of course, I'm assuming that you opened a freebie Hotmail account and
are NOT subscribed to MSN as your Internet service provider (ISP). Yet
I don't think you get POP3 and SMTP servers even if you were to
subscribe to MSN as your ISP since MSN uses Hotmail for e-mail service
and Hotmail stop providing POP3 and SMTP server a long time ago. If you
were an MSN subscriber then you probably get the Hotmail premium service
that includes WebDAV access from Outlook [Express] (so you are still not
using POP3 and SMTP).
