I began receiving an error message yesterday when trying to download
messages from Hotmail into Outlook to the effect that free access to
hotmail has been discontinued. Are others having this problem and is
this correct? I have read that MS wasn't going to do this until the
Spring of 2005. Can anyone who has had this happen to them confirm
that after becoming a paid subscriber ($19.95) they were able to
download their email?

They've started doing it now - the message is correct. I haven't tried a
paid account, but others have & it seems to work.

Are you absolutely sure they've started now as opposed to this being a
glitch with some accounts? It would be great to hear of this happening with
someone's paid account, but I think it's rare enough at this point that
we're unlikely to see anyone chime in anytime soon. In my case, my
@hotmail.com had this happen about 18 hours ago, but my @msn.com account is
still going; both are the free variety.

Yes - they are rolling out the change.

I read that hotmail was going to block POP access.
Another reason to get a gmail account...they've added FREE POP access.

"In September, we stopped providing new, free Hotmail account customers
access to WebDAV functionality. Customers who had already enabled the
functionality will continue to have access to it until early next year. At
that time, the protocol will become available only as part of our
subscription e-mail services for as little as US$19.95 a year with MSN
Hotmail Plus."

This is one of the most inspiring signatures I've seen; you sound
quite enlightened my friend. Thank you.

Well Folks,
Now I have 250 Megs of storage and the Hotmail free POP is
working again. I had a feeling this would happen...

Do you mean that it is possible to access hotmail from outllook wihtout
paying the additional fees ?
(e-mail address removed)

No.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Smurk asked:

Yes, it is working for me now. I just tried it again as I read your
message and it is working. I have not paid anything and I now have the
free POP access back and 250 Megs of storage. I am not sure if the
person who answered no, did it as an expression of surprise but try it
and see if it is working for you. Please confirm here. I hope I'm not
the only one. :-)
