I had heard there was a way to create a folder to drop files into. and
when you did drop for instance a video file into it, a script would run
and convert that video to a specified format and copy it to another
destination.

if this works for WinXP, can someone point in the right direction with
instruction on how to create them?

I want to be able to set up a PMP (personal media player) folder to drop
downloaded videos into and convert them to the optimum settings just for
my player.

Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really
bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like a
serious bummer.

apparently neither do the MVP's

Ask for a refund then. This is a peer to peer newsgroup. Everyone that
posts here is a volunteer. Maybe no one knows the answer to your question,
or maybe no one wants to help you out. In any event, you're not owed an
answer. But since you weren't aware that bump doesn't do anything in a
Usenet newsgroup, I thought I'd help you out with that. Good luck.

lol :) I'd been around Usenet since 96, bbs a long time before that. I
am a network engineer and am doing my ccna4 by the end of this year. I
am help desk support and I repair home user pc's in my spare time.

I have googled for an answer but all I come up with are 3rd party
solutions, when the concept is a Microsoft engineered product and can be
done with notepad within WinXP.

am I better off with TechNet?

how do you get a MVP anyway?

Not a folder but a shortcut to the script that you write that will run
the 3rd party software that you have. So it's not a case of it "working
for WinXP" but your capability in writing the script.

Considering the attitude he just demonstrated, I know I certainly don't want
to help him.

And you didn't now "bump" doesn't mean anything in Usenet? Interesting.

You're the one with the issue you can't figure out. As I said in the
previous reply, good luck.

:) the "bump" was me being cheeky.

TechNet has no mention of "hot folders" anyway. I was hoping for the
expertise of the users in this group, and seriously, how do you get the
moniker of MVP to display in a sig? is there a set of courses to complete?
or defined by either quantity or quality of replies in these groups?

you have been helpful in replying, but others here seem to be looking for
quantity of replies to get their credos. in my local groups that I support I
tend towards direct answers only in threads that I can answer, while others
just like to boast of their knowledge without actually answering the
question.

a friends sister carries that MS-MVP title in real life here in Australia
but she never helps unless it's in person to a paid client

thanks for the reply, do you have a url handy that details how to make a
script sit in the directory tree where files can be dropped on it to
process? anything that might lead me in the right direction? I am not even
sure what to use as a search parameter.

MVP is an honorary award from MS given on an annual basis, for providing a
certain level of assistance. It can be in newsgroups or forums or just
about any aspect of computer support. A first time MVP must be nominated,
then their work is reviewed, input from others is solicited, and someone at
MS decides. Each subsequent year their work is reviewed and a fresh
decision is made whether to award it for another year. See this link for
info.

what is to prevent some jerk just typing mvp in their sig? sure there's
http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/communities/mvp.aspx?product=1&competency=Windows+-+Help
to see a list of those who are genuine, but not everyone here uses their
real name.

Start by putting a shortcut to your "converter" program on the desktop.
Then Drag and drop a video file onto it and see what happens.
