WinXP Pro SP1, all the latest patches.
IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.040919-1003
Firefox 1.0.

I just installed a hosts file on this PC using the HOSTS File Manager from
this site.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Now in both IE and Firefox I get popups to log on to sites such as
ads.pointroll.com. Clicking Cancel makes the sites come up fine, just
without the ads.

Some months ago I used the same HOSTS File Manager on three other PCs, and I
don't recall this happening.

This PC is at the client site, which is a large agency of the US government.
The agency is very big on computer security. Perhaps there is some setting
in GPEDIT.MSC . . .

I haven't found anything in google, google groups or the Firefox support
forum. How can I get rid of these logon popups?

Thanks.

That page lists two links for HOSTS File Managers. Which one did you
install?

"HOSTS File Manager"
Did you try just copying the HOSTS file on that page and overwriting
your current HOSTS file with it?

That is basically all the program does. It also lets you make backups. My
hosts file is 5784 lines long. Before running the program it was the sample
hosts file of about 10 lines.

I'm using the same program on 3 other computers with no problems. But on
this computer I get dialog boxes to enter the username & password for e.g.
http://fastcounter.linkexchange.com, http://ad.it.doubleclick.net,
http://hits.webstat.com, ... This is true in both IE and Firefox.

It doesn't take long to hit the Escape key, but I'd like to find whatever
setting is making these logon dialog boxes come up go away.

Thanks.

P.S. This shows up in the rectangular boxes on the web pages.

"HOSTS File Manager"

The author of that app, onetime MVP George Gedye, hasn't been heard from in
ages and most certainly hasn't updated or tweaked the app in over a year
(but it sounds like you have other issues, judging from you later posts in
this thread).

Interesting conversation (in which you reveal much more about your systems
than you did here).
