Is there a registry value for the location of the HOSTS file? If so, where is
it? I haven't been able to find it.

Hi, akbigdog.

I suppose you know that the location is %SystemRoot%\drivers\etc (and in
this case, etc does not mean et cetera). But I can't find a registry entry
for it, either.

Yeah, I know that much. I would like to change the location from
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC to a network drive. This way, I can have my
testing server and development machine reference the same HOSTS information
without having to change it in multiple places--the HOSTS file on each
machine. There is probably a registry value that has that location stored,
but I haven't been able to find it. Everything I've found in a Google search
returns instructions on how to block ads using the HOSTS file. I'm not
interested in that (Firefox does that job wonderfully!). Any help offered
would be appreciated.

I don't believe there is such an option. Even if there were, I can't
imagine the OS would ever support maintaining a local machine host file on a
network drive. That just wouldn't make sense.

Just my 2¢ worth. Larry

Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

Hi,

For Windows XP\2000/NT4, it is the value data in the registry value
"DataBasePath" found under the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
that will determine the path to the hosts file.
