Hosting photos on own server: what are the pros and cons here?

g' day dear friends,


i am currently musing bout the options of hosting alternatively - i am thinking to ditch google-photos and to host all the images on my own.

Question: how do you host your images - i am currently musing about the setup of a new version - the self hosted option - that runs immich.

But i am currently not very sure bout the pros and cons - so perhaps we can discuss it here. We can discuss the options - to switch from Google-photos to a self hosted system - and i would be glad to see a fruitful discussion
