In the IE Tools dropdown list, an item has appeared that
is labelled: ?????? ??????? ??????
When I click on it, I am directed to
http://www.hitboss.com/Wallpapers/, which contains erotic
material that I'd just as soon not have a direct link to
on my toolbar. This appeared in 5.5. I uninstalled 5.5
(getting back to 4.0), and installed 6.0. That didn't
help. I ran the latest version of Ad-aware. That made it
disappear for a brief few seconds and then it returned. I
ran Cyberscrub Pro 3.5 and Ad-aware 6.0 multiple times
sequentially and repeated the IE uninstall (to 4.0) and
reinstall of 6.0, and again ran Cyberscrub and Ad-aware
multiple times, and I cannot make the item go away no
matter what I do. I am on Windows98. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. I hope there is something I can do
short of wiping the hard drive and starting over. Thanks.

Hi,
A google search didn't turn up much on hitbox.

A few ideas...
Anything suspicious in Ctrl Panel> Add/remove?
Anything suspicious in [C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files]?
Anything suspicious in MSCONFIG> Startup?

And, it may not remove the program which may be recreating this but try
ToolbarCop from http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/ (near the bottom.)

Last...
If unsuccessful with those steps, go to HijackThis Quick Start:
http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
Read the instructions, download HijackThis and post a log to the "Spyware
and Hijackware Removal Support"
forum at http://forums.spywareinfo.com/
The experts there will tell you what to fix.

Hope this helps,
Don

Thanks for your help. Spybot found 3 related items (a
file, a registry entry, and a redirecting link). However,
removing them did not remove the tool bar item.
ToolbarCop, however, from www.mvps did the job. With deep
appreciation, -MY

Thank you for much Don. I couldn't find anything
suspicious in the areas you suggested. Although Spybot
found three related items (an HTML file, a registry entry,
and a redirecting link), removing them did not remove the
program. ToolbarCop, however, identified precisely the
miscreant (and a related but less offensive item), and
removed them both. I am delighted and greatly appreciate
your help. Best regards, -M
