Just got a new XP media center computer. Have
been trying to network to my existing network of a desktop (Host) and laptop
(guest). Both are running 2000 Pro. When I try to configure the network via
the XP machine it recognizes the laptop but not the old desptop machine (host
of the old network). Is that because the XP machine is also the "Host"? If
so how do I reconfigure my old machine(2000pro) to be a guest on the network?
Hopefully I made sense of what my problem is.
Thanks in advance
Elliot

Elliot,

Your terminology would lead us to think that one computer (laptop) connects thru
the other (desktop). If so, how does the new computer connect? Are all 3
computers on the same subnet?

How about you provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer,
so we can diagnose the problem easier. Read this article, and linked articles,
and follow instructions precisely:

Thanks for replying Chuck
My laptop will network with both the old desktop and the new one through my
dlink router. I tried to run ipconfig on the old 2000pro machine and said it
"is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or
batch file"
Was read elsewhere that I should delete my "ics host" on the old desktop and
make a new connection as a client. How would I do that? As you can see I am
not very confidant in myself in this but willing to learn and try.

Elliot,

The best way to learn about computers is to try, and to make mistakes. The
first month I worked with personal computers, my boss would say at least daily
"Why the f### did I do that?" or "Oh s###!". If you regard a system rebuild as
non-fatal recovery, you can't make fatal mistakes with computers at all.

There are two possible reasons for a Windows 2000 computer to respond to a
properly typed "ipconfig" with "...not recognized as an internal or external
command...":
# Invalid Path.
# TCP/IP not installed.

To check for the first possibility, check your Path setting.

To check for the second possibility, check your network components list.

I think this is what you were looking for. Yes?

That's it, Elliot!

Looks pretty clean so far.
# All 3 computers on same subnet 192.168.0/24, same DHCP server and default
gateway.
# All 3 computers have compatible name resolution, Broadcast / Hybrid.
# No computer shows IPV6 infestation.

Let's look at browstat on all 3. NOTE You must download browstat.exe - read the
article.
