A recent McAfee Security Suite update slowed my computer to a crawl and
prohibited some Internet Explorer Java streams. In an attempt to see if, in
fact, McAfee was the issue, I attempted to uninstall it. It froze up during
the uninstall (when attempting to uninstall "undefined"). Upon reboot,
McAfee appears to be still somewhere but invisible.

This has caused many strange and serious problems including:

1. Windows Restore will not launch.

2. Windows Media Player has disappeared (attempted reload appears
successful but results in "Internal Application Error has occurred." when
launched.)

3. Most games and all System Tools have disappeared.

4. Outlook Express disappeared and had to be reinstalled. All settings
were changed.

5. Internet Explorer behaves oddly: (1) pages display strangely
(incomplete, hidden menus display, etc.); (2) automatic movement between
pages doesn't work; (3) some pages simply don't download (or display, they
may download?).

6. Can't access Windows Update or McAfee update (can't reinstall McAfee).

Anyone have any ideas? I should think some settings have been changed but I
don't have any idea what or where to start to reset. I suspect this
involves the registry but don't know.

Help!

Contact McAfee tech support to see if they have an uninstall utility to
help remove the remnants or have any suggestions. Some of these large,
all encompassing AV/security suites (Norton, too) have their hooks so
deep and into so many areas that a botched install or removal can leave
the system in a very undefined state, and because their impact is so
extensive there often is no simple fix. I would recommend against using
McAfee (or Norton) security suite.

can you try logging in under another profile, it sounds like there maybe a
profile corruption

As suggested, call McAfee for advice.

If that fails, I'd try a repair-install using a Windows CD.

(Boot from Windows CD, select Install - NOT recovery console - then on the
screen where you select the partition to install-to, choose to Repair this
partition.

I'm assuming you have a Windows CD, some OEM computers don't of course come
with one.

If that is unsuccessful I'd say it's time to bite the bullet, format and
clean install.

Apparently this is a known McAfee problem. Since the problem itself
prevented me from finding the solution on McAfee's site, I had to use the
wife's computer to go there. I quickly found the solution . . . a program
to repair all the corrupted .dll files the uninstall messed up. They
attempt to disquise this by describing the symtoms (blank IE pages) rather
than the cause (problems resulting from failed uninstall). I now use AVG,
Spybot, Adaware and Cloudmark. Doubt that McAfee will give me my $100 for
two year subscription back.

Bob, glad you got it working and thanks for posting back your resolution.
It will help others. I am not familiar with Cloudmark so I can't comment on
it. What firewall are you using? One nice free one is Sunbelt Software's
Kerio Personal Firewall. For anti-virus, Avast has a nice fee one too.
