Hello, I live in a basement apartment, and me and the people upstairs share
cable internet through a (wired) router. I know almost nothing about
computers and I'm just wondering, can they access my computer or files from
their computer without me knowing? I'm not saying they ever would, I'm just
wondering if can be done, since I keep alot of personal info on my hard
drive. Thanks!

it is possible particularly if you have file sharing turned on and your
firewall off.

I would suggest turn off file sharing and turn on firewall..

If you share Internet service with your neighbors, and both of you connect thru
the same router, you are on the same LAN. If you were to follow all of my
instructions about Windows Networking, since my instructions are written to help
folks share their computers, then, yes, your personal information could be
accessed.

But, if you don't wish to share your personal information, and you have but one
single computer, do this:
# Turn off (Stop, then Disable) the Server service.

# Un install File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

That will protect you from your average geographical neighbors (the ones
upstairs).

But consider protecting yourself from your Internet neighbors too, there are
lots more of them, and many are more maliciously and technologically inclined
than your average geographical neighbors. Layer your defenses.

How computer savvy are your neighbors? Keep in mind there is no such thing
as a 100% secure computer. If you are really worried that much, you might
want to try a third party application such as Zone Alarm as well as disabling
all file sharing, remote desktop, and enabling the windows firewall.

Adam,

Not my neighbors. When you reply directly to the OP, you ought to reply to him,
not to me.
