I am tryin to establish a LAN between my desktop and laptop. I am not
running the connection through a router, just from one NIC to the other.
when connected, my LAN icon says limited or no connectivity -- how do i fix
this so that i am able to share/xfer files from one computer to the other?

Are you using a crossover cable? The message is not the problem, but if you're
using a regular patch cable, that could be one problem.
