Hi,

Before i own a switch, this is my home network setup for 2
pcs. Cable modem (from internet service provider) is
connected to pc1 (pc1 has two network cards) and the pc2
is also connected to pc1. I must always turn ON my pc1
(although pc1 is not in use at times) to enable my pc2 to
get internet connection. This is troublesome and consume
electricity.

Now, situation change. I have 3 pcs and a switch.
Using a switch, cable modem , i would like to setup a
networking for my 3 pcs at home. One requirement for the
network setup is that each machine should be independent,
means does NOT need to depend on other machine (like what
i did previously) to get internet connection. I just want
to on the specific pc that i want to use and is able to
browse internet.

Any idea how should i set up the network for the above
scenario? Which type of cable to use? Straight or cross
cable? Do i need to set up the IP manually or the switch
will work as DHCP?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi
i recently set up a similar network and did a whole lot
of enquiries into what i should do.

a switch can not do DHCP, but a router can. a small
router doesnt cost much more than a switch. and they are
really easy to set up. pretty much just plug it all in in
the right order (follow the manual) and ur surfing from
all computers in no time. and all computers are
independednt of each other.

as far as cables are concerned, between the computers and
the switch, they are all straight cables, so u can't use
ur cross-over cable from ur switch-free network. but
between the modem and the switch, i'm not sure. i think
its cross-over, but don't quote me. my router manual
clearly states that i should use the cable that my ISP
gave me when connecting it to the computer. that is, use
the same cable to connect modem to switch, as used to
connect modem to computer

so, without the router to do the setting up
automatically, u will probly have to set up the ips
manually. however, i think u need someting that can
provide network address translation (NAT) to be able to
share the internet. that's why i went with a router
anyway.

hope i've helped
