Hi,

I wish to 'network' my old PC tower to my new one to access files and
for additional disk storage etc - is this possible/easy?

Thanks

According to what I've read here and on the web. I'm wanting to do the same
thing. I bought a hub. The clerk at Future Shop told me that's what I
needed. Cost me 50 bucks! Now, through here and the incredibly helpful
people I've encountered they tell me I need a router (not the carpenter's
kind) and they run about 50 bucks (CDN) for a half decent one. I understand
I'll be able to connect to my single IP address (although if both computers
are accessing it at the same time, and one isn't dormant but still connected
it'll slow down) and I'll ALSO be able to "talk" to the newer 2.2 Gig 80 Gig
HD HP and the 333Mhz 5.1 GIG HD clone). The former is running XP Home SP2
and the latter is running XP Professional SP2 (Ed Package). Am I right in
saying all this people? Please correct me if I'm wrong....

There are two types of networks - Wired and Wireless. If you want both, get
Wireless with ethernet plugs.

If you want Wireless, you will need:
A WIRELESS Router
Wireless Adapters (1 Adapter per computer)
Ethernet Cables (Only if you want both Wireless and Wired)

If you want Wired, you will need:
A WIRED Router
Ethernet cables (1 cable per computer, and normally one comes with the
router)

Buy them, then wire it all up, using the start guide with the router. Then
set it up, as it says in the start guide. Please note that you will need the
details from your ISP (Username and Password to enter)

It is rather easy to set up, when you follow the instructions, and it will
probably take about an hour or less.

If all you want to do is conect/network these two PC's and no other PC's are
in the mix, it is fairly simple. First, each pc should have an ethernet card,
and then they can be physically connected via a crossover cable. That's it as
far as hardware goes, then you run the network connection wizard on each pc
and allow them to see/access each other.

If you have more than two PC's, then the router, etc. come into play.

M Craig...

You mean to say I don't need anything other than a cable joining the
computers? One is on the internet, thru my ISP. The other is not connected
to anything. What *I* want to do is connect the two computers and give them
both access to the internet so each can get updates from MS and new virus
definition files.

Then it depends...

If you are thinking about getting another computer or laptop, then get a
router.
If you are just going to use the two computers, use the cable.

What kind of cable? Where do I plug the thing in? You mean network card to
network card? But that would eliminate my being able to access my ISP
wouldn't it? I already have two computers. I want to network them, provide
the smaller computer with access to the printer, which is connected to the
larger computer, and to the internet, which currently is connected to the
larger computer. So in that scenario I WOULD need the router, right?

I'm not exactly sure what M Craig was talking about. I have heard of serial
which can connect the two. When I only had 2 computers, I just got a router.
I found it easier, especially now, as we have about 4 laptops and 1 computer
now!

I've always recommended getting a router, a family with 2 machines wanting
to link the internet and printer - and I told them to get a router.

Also, if it is connected, although with a router, if the main computer is
on, you can't print on the other one, with a cable, you won't be able to
print OR use the internet!

I think you should just go ahead and get a router, as if it is serial, most
modern computers don't have that port!

I hope it is OK to jump in here as I have similar problems. 2 PC PC1 xp
pro SP 2,, PC 2 XP Home SP 2. Computer didn't recognize integrated NIC on PC
2 so I added PCI NIC. PC1 has integrated NIC. Connected NIC to NIC with RJ 45
crossover cable and ran wizard on both. 2 problems printer doesn't work with
PC 2 It's connected to PC 1. Second problem if I disconnect from internet, PC
2 causes PC 1 to redial after 60 seconds. Shut down PC 2 no auto redial.
Reboot pc 2 and as soon as the boot sequence is complete PC 1 redials. PC1
connects to ISP via 56k dial up modem.
