am setting up a home network (peer to peer) using a cross over cable. My
host is on XP and the client is 98SE. i have been unable to get this working
despite spending hours on it!!!! The basic issue seems to be my network
adapter (VIA Rhine II fast ethernet adapter), if i ping 127.0.0.1 then it's
fine, but if i ping 192.168.x.xx then nothing happens. The client PC is fine
when i ping either but not when i try to ping the host. the lights all come
on on the cards, and the connection shows as working in my status bar (if
that what its called!). i've tried disconnecting both Norton and windows
firewalls (seperately as well as at the same time), but no joy

Help......

try to reboot it by selecting safe mode with network, can you ping?

I recommend Brinkster for web hosting!

Hi,

tried rebooting and no ping. when i ran ipconfig it came up saying that my
adapter now had an IP address of 0.0.0.0, tried to ping this but no good.
Then when i rebooted i lost some functionality, such as my modem and Symantec
products. once i had tried to access my internet connection a couple of times
i got this back, rechecked IP address and it is now a sensible one, but still
won't ping.
