I have three computers (two desktop & a laptop) networked
together using Windows XP Professional. Since my wife
and I are the only ones using these PCs, I would like to
turn off all security between them so that we can access
files on any PC from any other PC. I know how to set up
the home network and how to map drives to the other PCs,
but I keep getting an error that I do not have access to
the other drives and to see my system administrator. I
AM the system admin, but I can't find out how to provide
the access. Can anyone hepl me? I have not been able to
find the appropriate help on the Microsoft web site or
through their e-mail contact system. Thanks.

When you create a LAN connection, XP by default turns on
its firewall. This is indicated by a small lock in the
upper right corner of the LAN connection icon. Go to
property for that icon and turn off the firewall under
the advance tab.

If you have connected any of these PCs to the Internet
and your router does not have a built in firewall that is
on, you are under risk of hacker attack, invasion and
misuse of your PCs.

Ideally you should use a 3rd party firewall (like zone
alarm) on all the 3 PCs and create access permissions to
the IP addresses of the other PCs on the LAN.

Also you will have to turn on the sharing on all the PCs,
though XP reserves "shared files" folder by default.

Besides selecting to "share this drive" one also needs to checkmark "allow
network users to change files" . Without that enabled on each machine the
files are a read only share. Also without that extra checkmark you cannot
create folders on network drives remotely.
