Thanks for your reply.

(1) The two machines are connected by a cable (cross-over) there is no hub
(2) Both machines have the ICS service marked as 'started' and DHCP is
'started'
(3) The icon for the shared Internet connection sometimes appears in 'My
Network Places'

In checking this information I notice that when I look at the Local Area
Connection Status, Support tab the dialogue box says the Address type is
'Automatic Private Address' and I think it should say 'Assigned by DHCP'

Hi Noel,

A couple more questions ....
(1) So machine A is the ICS Host machine. I assume one adapter is connected
to the Internet while the other is connected to machine B, the ICS client
with a cross over cable. Is this correct?

(2) From the ICS Client, when this was set to receive DHCP IP addresses and
lost connection to the Internet, did you try obtaining a new IP address
(e.g. from command prompt, type "ipconfig /renew"). Did this work? Does
the Internet Gateway icon show up in the Network Connections folder after
you have received an IP address?

(3) Do you have firewall enabled on your ICS Client machine as well or just
on the ICS Host machine?

(4) After rebooting the machine, does everything work again?

Thx,
Mei

Hi Mei,

Thanks again. To answer your questions:

(1) Yes Machine A (Compaq) is the ICS Host Machine. It connects via a 56K
modem to the internet and is connected to Machine B (Dell) the client
machine via a crossover cable. It has a Netgear F311 NIC.

(2) When I used the wizard and the XP CD to install the home network all
was well. I think this is what you mean by 'setting it to receive DHCP IP
addresses'. The Network Gateway Icon used to show up in the Network
connections folder but it doesn't any more. When I tried typing 'ipconfig
/renew' the whole sistem grinds to a halt until I do a control-break.

(3) Black Ice Defender is on both machines but I did try shutting it down on
both.

(4) Now nothing changes after rebooting the machines, though at first a
reboot was enough to get the connections showing.

Sorry - this seems to be a hopeless case!

Hi Noel,

Sorry for the delay in response.

One thing to try instead of using the XP CD to install the home network.
Let's just try to do it manually and see what happens.

On your ICS Host Machine (Machine A)
Ensure your firewall is enabled on this machine

1. Go to the Network Connections Folder (To open Network Connections Folder,
right-click on the My Network Places icon, and select Properties).
(Question: Do you have any other adapters aside from the one connected to
Machine B and the modem?)
2. Right-click on your 56k Modem and select Properties.
3. Go to the Advanced tab. Do you see that second box checked (e.g. ICS)?
If not, check this checkbox.
(Question: Do you see anything else checked?)
4. Afterwards, ensure that the adapter that is connected to Machine B has
the static IP address of 192.168.0.1, do you see this?

On your ICS Client (Machine B)
Try the following with the firewall disabled on this machine (but ensure
that it is enabled for your ICS Host Machine).

1. From a command prompt, again try renew your IP address.
2. Go to the Network Connections Folder (To open Network Connections Folder,
see above)
3. Right-click on your adapter that is connected to Machine A and select
Properties.
4. Go to the Advanced tab. Ensure none of these checkboxes are checked
(including ICF and ICS). If they are, please uncheck and try renewing the
IP address.
