Home network folder sharing ?

First...please understand that I have little idea what I'm talking
about..i.e....networking novice ! I have a home network with 3 pcs and a
wireless HP all-in-one printer all connected through a Netgear Router/hub.
My internet connection is all through the router. I have two folders only
on my main desktop #1 (W2000sp4) that I have configured so pc #2 (W2000sp4)
and laptop #3(WXPsp2) can access to transfer files, etc ( from here on...the
following does not involve desktop #2)

I have file/printsharing disabled on all three...and MS Network client
enabled on all three.

When I am on my laptop...if I click on one of the shortcuts on the laptop's
#3 desktop to the two shared folders on the desktop PC #1...I get a log in
screen to the desktop PC which is good.

What I want to know is other than restarting...is there a way to
disable/disconnect the connection from the laptop #3 to the desktop #1 after
file transfer/copy/move operations...so that nothing else can access the
desktop PC #1 unless I re-logon to the desktop #1 form the laptop #3 ?

Before logging in to access one of the two shared folders on my desktop
#1...the laptop does not show up in network places..it does after logging in
to the desktop #1 from the laptop...

I want to be able to "disconnect" the laptop from the desktop #1 after I
complete a few daily tasks....and reset set the laptop so that it doesn't
show up in my main desktop #1 network places...I am assuming that if the
laptop is not in network places on the desktop...no files/info/programs can
be shared/run/or exchanged between the two ?

Thanks, Tim

Tim,

Since you're admitting that you know very little that's OK. You probably know
more than some who think that they know it all. Nobody knows it all.

But please start with this idea of connecting and disconnecting your computers,
to prevent access by malicious parties. This concept is also known as Security
By Obscurity, or hiding yourself. This is not always an effective policy.

Now, file sharing, and Windows Networking, use a system known as the Browser,
for providing the contents of Network Neighborhood. This is NOT Internet
Explorer or Firefox, it is a totally different subsystem. The browser caches
information on your computer, and there can be as much as an hour latency in the
cache. If you connect and disconnect your computers, cached information won't
catch up.

I'll work with you as you debug your problem, but I'll bet even money that your
problems start from your need to disconnect your computers. You'll be a lot
better off leaving everything connected, and implementing a decent layered
security strategy, with a standard and supported file sharing.
