How can I most simply connect a Windows XP laptop to a Windows 98 desktop? I
do have a Targus USB port replicator with ethernet software, but not sure how
to proceed, such as serial or paralell, how much hardware do I need, will I
need a server, etc. Can anyone help? I am loking for the simplest solution.
Thank you.

OK, to start, Ethernet and USB are 2 different standards. Ethernet is a
dedicated standard for networking computers. USB is a standard for connecting
peripherals such as keyboard and mice to a computer, that was extended for
networking computers.

If you want to go the simplest route, and have Ethernet ports on both computers,
you're part way there already. If you have to buy a $15 Ethernet adapter for
the Windows 98 computer, do that. Then a simple $10 Ethernet cross-over cable,
and you're halfway done.

Just run the Networking Setup Wizard on the Windows XP laptop, and specify "This
computer belongs to a network that does not have an Internet connection.".

No server needed.
