Home Edition: No F8 Option at System Start-Up?

I'm new to XP and am currently using Home Edition (SP1a) on a DELL
laptop, having upgraded from an antique (circa 1995, Win'95) desktop
computer. Prior to installing XP-Home, I made numerous unsuccessful
attempts at a "clean" install of Windows 2000 Professional before
finally giving up in favor of installing XP-Home. During my brief
experience with 2k-Pro, one thing I *did* like (and expected to find in
XP) was the option to press F8 during the start-up process, which then
gave me a number of useful start-up options (e.g., Last Known Good, SAFE
Mode, etc.). However, I do not seem to get the opportunity to engage
this set of options when I boot up XP-Home.

Is my XP-Home system working as designed? Or is my current confuration
somehow missing the proper settings that would allow these F8-enabled
options?

BTW- I've already explored *and used* the "System Restore" utility to
regress my system to a previous "restore point"(1), as well as manually
setting a new restore point. And this seems like a pretty good utility.
However, it (at least) seems that one can only take advantage of this
utility once one has already managed to successfully boot the operating
system in the first place. I'm concerned about the potential scenario
in which I wouldn't even be able to get far enough along in a successful
boot-up attempt that would allow me to engage this System Restore
utility.

I'd sure like to get a better handle on this before I get too much
further along with installing my application suite of software, so
whatever guidance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

1. Actually, I've done this twice now -- both times to regress to a
point prior to unsuccessful Shutdown attempts. So far, I've only had
two such episodes, and the relative infrequency of these has given me a
good feeling about the general reliability and stability of XP. :-)

Thanks for the quick reply. Your first referenced link (above) is the
one I needed; specifically, the following lines solved the puzzle for
me:
"Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.
On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating
systems, you can press the F8 key when ... the Boot Menu appears."

So, I'm moreorless all set... but the following thought has occurred to
me: i.e., I'm considering altering my boot.ini file to trick XP into
thinking I have multiple boot partitions, so that it will automatically
present the Boot Menu, thereby giving me more opportunity to hit F8
without having to be so attentive during the boot-up process.

Does anyone know if I can do this without any deleterious side effects?
Conversely, does anyone think this is just a plain bad idea for any
other reasons?

Thanks again for the help.

Save a Backup Copy of Boot.ini !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, so you won't need
KB330184. I know that you have XP Home, you're gonna have to read
some stuff here and check out the links before doing anything. Remember
KB330184, the last link listed.

You can copy the existing entry from [Operating Systems] so that you have
two.

From >>
Boot Menu Is Not Displayed and Timeout Value Is Not Used
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;242443

Even though this is for Windows 2000 some of it applies.

[[If there is only one value in the [Operating Systems] section in the
Boot.ini file, the option is not displayed. Windows starts immediately
because there is no choice to be made.]]

[[If you need the Boot menu to be displayed, edit the Boot.ini file and
create a second entry in the [Operating Systems] section. You can copy the
existing entry in that section. After you add a second entry, the Boot menu
is displayed...]]]

Wes-

Thanks for your very thorough instructions on how I could proceed. I
will save these for later reference. At the moment, I'm still trying to
get my new XP system up to speed on more pressing fronts... so I'll
defer looking into this 'til later. But I *do* really appreciate your
input.

Thanks again.
