About 2-3 months ago a webpage appeared on my IE. The
page claimed to be NTL (A UK telephone line network),
offering help to get rid of a virus it had supossedly
found on my Laptop. It told me to download a certain file
from the webpage in order to get rid of the virus and
continue to use my internet connection. But the wepage
was clearly a fake and the file the page suggested to
download was a virus (stinger.exe). So I closed my IE
window and opened a new one only to find the same page
now on this window too.

It took me nearly an hour to prove to myself it was no
good, I couldnt get rid of it.

So I asked a friend on Msn Messenger to send me an anti-
virus program, I installed this and restarted my system,
only to find that when I connected to the internet, my
messengers failed to work and connect.

I ran the program and it failed to pick up anything wrong
with my system, but I did find some weird folders on my
C: drive. I have deleted them.

So, 3 months later I am still unable to connect to any
websites, as this page will load up no matter what
address I type in. But for some reason, www.microsoft.com
works for me and I hope that this lifeline will enable me
to get full use of my internet connection again.

Please suggest some ways in which to help me get rid of
this site.

Thank You For You Support

Jamie.

weird problem made weirder as Stinger.exe is a valid virus removal tool!

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses.
It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to
assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system.
Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process
scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.

How do I use Stinger?

1.. Download Stinger.exe v2.3.9 [819,200 bytes] (8/16/2004)
a.. or Download ePOStg238.Zip EPO deployable version (for EPO
administrators). Instructions for EPO 2.5X and EPO 3.X are available.

This version of Stinger includes detection for all known variants, as of

You were wise to be cautious though as any file can be renamed.

I would check your proxy settings for internet explorer as well as your
hosts file.

do a search for a file called hosts no extension you can open it with
notepad it should essentially be blank with just instructions on how it
works and an example

for the proxy settings look under tools internet options connections

clear all your temp files and cookies

also try just using an IP address and see if it works

Run the Antivirus software in safe mode and make sure you have the latest
definitions also download adaware or have someone put it on a cd for you

Hi Jamie,

It may be a good idea to post a HiJack This log at a forum where it can be
analyzed for malware. D/load HiJack This from here:
http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/#Top
Create a new folder on your Desktop and call it HJT. Now, unzip the
hijackthis.exe file from the zipped archive that you d/loaded into the HJT
folder that you created. Ensure that all browser windows are closed, and
then run hijackthis.exe, opting to Scan (do NOT fix anything yet!) then opt
to Save Log. You could then copy and paste the contents of the Log in a New
Thread at Cybertechhelp's Cyber Safety forum:
http://cybertechhelp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25
You'll need to register (registration is free) at the Cybertechhelp site in
order to post there.
