Highlighting paragraphs

Is there a way of telling word not to highlight paragraphs so fast when I try to highlight bits that are currently off-screen? I am using word 2000 and it just goes so fast that it highlights a couple of pages before I can even take my finger off the mouse button.
 
Left click at the beginning of the text that you want to select, then use
the scroll bar to move through the document until the end of the text that
you want to select is visible. Then, hold down the shift key and left click
at that spot.
