High Ram usage

My query is similar to previuos post but, affects the length of time my pc is
running
What tends to happen since I updated to Sp2 via auto update is that upon
bbot up I have roughly 19 processes running and 180Mb as a page file which I
feel is fine, However over a period of time - each day this PF will gradually
increase until by 5days it has reached 350Mb but still only 19 Processes
runing all of which do not certainty add up to 350 more likely 140mb - so it
appears to not let go of previously requested ram but do not display it as
processes, I have tried to use Ramidle.exe to free up ram but a dr watson
type error is reported - search and destroy has been run and updated/imunized
etc.. only found a dso exploit in IE - also ran adaware - all seems to fine -
the programs i generally use are nero, Powerdvd, Office xp, and I.E 6 sp1, -
this happened using the beta version is sp2 too so I uninstalled it thinking
it was 'cos of the unfinished release.

PC specs Abit P4 1.4, Nvidia 32Mb 512Mb Samsung 800 Rambus
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Is Fast User Switching enabled ?, Perhaps you have "Sleeping"
profile(s) that are taking the missing memory content.

RAM tools that supposedly "Free-Up" memory aren't effective.

Unless you are using older applications, a Memory leak doesn't
seem likely.

I would be more inclined to look at Services and or Svchost for
the unrelinquished/mapped memory. Also a review of Startups &
Watchdogs may help.

Thanks for the quick response, Yes fast user is enabled - not sure what
sleeping profiles you refer to though, I have three users created 1. Me 2.
spare & 3. administrator - I am aware that my profile that I use most is
listed as 128Mb all the junk in My Docs I expect, as for Svchost.exe this
currently runs at a respectable 10-20Mb I usually have 4 of these - Prior to
Sp2 I had noticed these exe's increasing upto 50Mb - I have several services
actually disabled - i.e messenger, indexing, spooler & others

What I find frustrating is this only happens with sp2 - without any updates
it is fine i.e Sp0 - just don't have usb 2.0 support which I haven't needed
yet

I will try using the Spare account and see if there are any changes, and
turn off fast user service - come to think of fast user switching my error
log reports problems in trying to save as files still open and will try to
release when registry is free etc.. ! then goes on to talk about local and
system accounts.

I keep you updated on my findings

Get rid of RAMidle. That is what is causing the page file to increase.
It is doing nothing but provide a cosmetic 'feel good', and has these
side effects. All these 'memory manager' programs are worthless. See
my page www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

I have seemed to have rectified this problem in that I had files hidden from
the O/S which could only be viewed using RDC or booting from another o/s, -
these files were HXDEF.exe / inf, once deleted via a wink2k os that I had via
multiboot the ram usage returned to normal - so I was in effect blaming Sp2
for the problem when in fact it had detected through task manger something my
unpatched O/S had not.

Not rally sure what these files do as Anti virus will not pick up as they
are hidden, Google did find some hits though and was very useful

Hope this short explaination will help others too
