on my desktop I have a shared folder (the entire of my docs) as I work on
them on my laptop while my wife uses desktop.

The thing is I want to hide the docs from view as I don't want my kids
accidently deleting my precious work. I know I can make the files private
but then I can not share with the laptop.

I keep good back ups but my 5 year old goes on mad clicking runs and I fear
for years of work.

David,

Give us an idea what operating system you are running on both computers? XP
Home? XP Pro? Legacy OS?

There is one well known way of hiding shared data - Administrative Shares. But,
those do not work with XP Home, or with XP Pro using Guest authentication to
share thru the network.

You'll be far better off using XP Pro with non-Guest authentication, and setting
up an account for your son to use. Then do not give your son's account access
to your cherished files.

But, I must ask, are you backing up your files? Your son is not the only danger
here.
# A power failure at a most inconvenient time.
# Hardware failure.
# You could make a mistake.

Your most precious years of work should be backed up routinely. Daily, or more
often. Any of the above 3 factors could make a catastrophe, with or without
your son's involvement.

David,

Both XP Pro and Tablet are capable of Classic File Sharing. Disable Simple File
Sharing, and setup restricted access to each account that you don't trust.
Don't share all of your folders, indiscriminately, if you shouldn't.

But please start backing up your data too.
