Hide folders based on user

Hi all

I have several people using my computer. Under the Documents and Settings folder, each person has their own personal folder with their name on it. I have things set so that each person can select only their own folder. Is there a way so that, since people are unable to open any of the other folders that I can hide the other folders from the user? In other words, customize the the Hidden folder feature so that they can see only their own? It's not a really critical security thing that I want to do. It's just that I don't see a point in having all the other people's folders visible to a user if the user can't access anything in them

Is there a way to do this? Thanks...............Jo

With those specific folders, using only what ships with XP, there is no way
to
do what you outline. For non-special folders what we do sometimes do is
place the folderrs one extra level deep. Accounts without access see the
existence of the extra, one-higher folder, but they do not get to see the
names
of the contained folderrs.
Why you cannot do this with the folders you mention is because there is a
folder in Doc&Set that they do need to access, and so they have been granted
the ability to list the containing Doc&Set folder, and the only way to make
it
otherwise would remove their ability to see even their own (this could be
done
so they could still get at it, they just could not see it or the others
listed in
Doc&Set)

Nope. Not with Windows.

Well . . . I'll take that back. You could write an app that did that. Or
possibly even do something by writing a shell extension. But that
functionality isn't built into Windows.

Roger,

There is a product called "Cloak" made by ScriptLogic.
http://www.scriptlogic.com/cloak
From the website:
Simply put, Cloak provides increased security on NTFS volumes by adding
"Out of sight - out of mind" filtering to the Windows file system. Once
Cloak is installed on your Windows Servers, users will only see the
files and/or folders that they have permission to access.

Unfortunately, this product is designed to installs to 2000/2003
Server-class machines only (apparently it is not intended for
desktops).

In addition to the obvious use on "File Servers" there is also a case
for using it in multi-user environments like Terminal Server and Citrix
MetaFrame Server for the exact reasons you mentioned (hiding user
profile dirs and being bale to create custom start menu structures),
but I don't think that anyone has made a case for needing this on
clients.
